Fishing chart versus plotter: planning is not navigation

NOT FOR NAVIGATION. A fishing chart and a plotter do different jobs. The chart is a planning surface: depth, Folk-5, habitat scores, overlays where they are live. A plotter is a navigation instrument: position, official soundings, the line the hull actually steers. Do not steer a boat by this website. Do not treat a habitat score as a sounding. The job split

Planning answers: is this class a sit, is this contour a search, is this hour worth leaving. Navigation answers: where is the hull, what is under it according to a navigation chart, how do I not hit it.

Those jobs can share a wheelhouse. They must not share a legal role. Recreational planning still needs a navigation source you trust. This page will not name vendors. It will not attack other chart brands. It will not pretend one screen replaces both jobs.

Export workflows and saved routes live in in-app how-tos. They still do not make a planning surface into a plotter. 3D exaggeration still does not. A green score still does not.

What a fishing chart is for

On this corridor the planning chart shows bathymetry as a grid under a pin, Folk-5 substrate class, and species habitats where coverage says they are live. Italy overlays are incomplete for some modes. A chip is not a certified product.

Public place teasers cap scores. The free Habitat Checker still returns a number you can compare. The number is a model match, not a fish count. Metres without class are half a plan.

Suggested trolling lines are plans you can repeat. Watch the sounder anyway. Marine law still wins. Harbour and ferry traffic still win.

What a plotter is for

A plotter keeps you on a navigation chart while the hull moves. Official soundings, aids, and the vessel’s position are that instrument’s job. If you need to steer, use that job. If you need to decide whether a Folk-5 edge is worth a sit, use the planning chart before you leave, or as a second screen that you do not steer by.

This page will not tell you which unit to buy. It will not rank brands. It will not claim the planning website is “good enough inshore”.

Coverage and honesty

Live layers depend on coast. Incomplete Italy means a label can appear while the overlay is thin. Read coverage. Read model accuracy. Empty is more honest than a borrowed paragraph.

Plans are not headings

A saved route is a length and a score along a plan. It is not a heading to follow with your eyes off the water. Current-aware extras, where gated, still do not drive the hull. The skipper still watches traffic. Guests still hold their own permit. None of that is this split.

Italy and every other strip

The published sea-side strip and the live-layer map are product facts. They are not a navigation datum. South of Ancona the basemap may still pan. That is not a product claim and it is not a chart to steer by.
