Habitat layers

how species habitat maps work, which ones are free, and how to read the colours.

What you will learn: how species habitat maps work, which ones are free, and how to read the colours.

Where: MoreExperimental (phone) or Experimental (desktop)

A habitat layer paints the sea by how well the water and bottom match one species. It is a living score map, not a pin someone posted in a group.

Green (and similar “hot” colours in the legend) means stronger structure / score for that fish. Always open Show legends in Layers the first time you use a species.

Species you can open

Names in the list are localized (for example Gilthead seabream habitat). Internal nicknames you may still hear:

You may seeFish
Orada / Gilthead seabreamSparus aurata
Brancin / European seabassDicentrarchus labrax
MackerelMackerel habitat
BonitoAtlantic bonito
Pandora / PagellusCommon pandora
Zobatec / Common dentexDentex
Gof / Greater amberjackAmberjack
Strelka / BluefishBluefish
MahiMahi-mahi

Each one is its own mode. Switching to Mackerel habitat turns off gilthead colour and shows mackerel colour.

Free, trial, and VIP

PlanHabitats
FreeGilthead seabream (orada) only
First 48 hours (trial boost)Gilthead and European seabass, plus a banner such as Trial boost active
VIPEvery live habitat in the list

Locked rows stay visible. Tapping them opens Habitat unlock copy: Free keeps one habitat live; VIP opens the full Adriatic set.

Gilthead score cap (Free)

Free gilthead stays on the map, but the highest scores are VIP. After 20 August 2026, 12:00 CEST (10:00 UTC), Free hides / locks orada zones scored 60 and above. You still see everything below 60. Upgrade copy: The top-scoring Orada spots (60+) are VIP.

During the 48-hour trial boost this cap does not apply in the same way as the long-term Free cap.

How to use a habitat

  1. Open More → pick the species habitat.
  2. Turn the habitat overlay on in that mode’s setup (opacity slider if offered).
  3. Pan along a contour. Coach text from onboarding still applies: Green = stronger gilthead structure when you are on orada.
  4. Optionally run Find Top Areas to rank polygons in the view.
  5. Tap the sea to inspect.

Habitat colour is not a permission to fish. Check local rules and marine protected areas yourself.
