Fishing Istria: Savudrija to Pula, sand edges and Rovinj rock

Where are the fishing spots in Istria, from Savudrija to Medulin?

Along the west and south coast: Savudrija shallows, Umag, Novigrad and Poreč sand-and-mixed edges, Rovinj rock and islands, Pula harbour and Medulin's southern bays. Read Istria as two fisheries: this shallow shelf, and the steep Kvarner side east of Plomin.

Istria fishing spots are one shelf read north to south, not a resort list. The peninsula is the largest in the Adriatic and is shared by Croatia, Slovenia and Italy; this page owns only the Croatian west and south plate from the northern tip to the southern bays.

The mechanism is a shallow plate on the west and a separate wall on the east. The west coast stays in about 20–40 m. East of that drop the water falls past 50 m. That east wall is not this fishery’s job.

Novigrad and Medulin are named on the shelf and have no live guide yet. On the northern shoals in May 2024 we anchored at 20:10 on a sand-to-mixed join at about 22 m — Gregor’s home water. What is the bottom like on the west Istrian shelf?

A shelf of about 20–40 m: sand and mixed Folk-5 dominate Savudrija, Umag and Poreč, with rock and islands at Rovinj and harder inserts in Pula's mixed ground. The fish hold on the edges between classes, not on mid-plate sand.

The working story is an edge, not empty mid-plate sand. Two pins a hundred metres apart can sit on different classes. The holiday mistake is to stand the middle of the beige plate because the beach looks right from the car.

The mechanism is a 20–40 m plate with sand and mixed in the north, one rock child, and harder inserts in the southern mixed ground. Sand beside mixed, or mixed beside rock, is the join that holds fish.

Evidence: about 20–40 m from EMODnet Bathymetry frames on the Poreč and Rovinj guides — medians about 31 m and about 36 m on those frames. Geology shows the north-to-rock-child pattern already named. Sand beside mixed, or mixed beside rock, is the join; the middle of the beige plate is not. In June 2025 we stood a western-bay mixed belt at 05:20 at dawn; the midday July line on that same shore is a bathing belt, not a session. No catch count.

Which Istrian town fishes which way?

Savudrija: wide shallows where a hundred-metre miss lands on empty sand. Umag: the same plate with a marina clock. Poreč: western bays, mixed belts at dawn. Rovinj: islands and reefs, the rock child. Pula: harbour, short runs, mixed ground.

The mechanism is local relief on one plate: shallows, bays, islands, harbour. A hundred-metre miss on the northern shallows is empty sand. The rock child is not a surfcast-primary shore.

Which species run in Istria, and when?

Gilthead on sand and mixed edges from moles and beaches in late summer; seabass on the same shore; dentex on Rovinj rock and the Kvarner-side drops in spring and autumn; bonito and mackerel runs in autumn; squid in winter.

Istria runs by season and bottom. The live page used to name the bream and the rock fish without months. The calendar below ties each headline target to the class it uses.

The mechanism is shallow edges in warm months, rock in cooler months, bait runs in autumn, lights in winter. European seabass shares the late-summer shore with the bream. Pandora can sit slightly off the shallowest sand. Midday bathing belts are out of the shore story. A week in May is a rock-and-search week; a week in August is a dawn-shore week on this same west plate.

Which technique fits the Istrian shelf?

Anchor on a Folk-5 edge (sand beside mixed, or mixed beside Rovinj rock) and move if the first drop is mute. Dawn surfcasting on open sand at Savudrija, Umag and quiet Poreč. Trolling is a contour search, then a sit.

The shelf rewards edge anchoring and dawn shore work. It does not pretend to be a drop-off trolling coast. Shore jigging is secondary for the visitor week.

The mechanism is a shallow sand plate: fish concentrate on class joins and in low light. If the first drop is mute, move a short way along the same join rather than steaming for a new secret mark. Midday in July on a bathing belt is not a technique failure. Anchor on a Folk-5 edge is the boat line this coast can name without over-claim; dawn surfcasting is the shore line on open sand.

Evidence: May 2024 northern-shoals anchor on the join; June 2025 western-bay dawn surfcast. Trolling on this plate is a search line then a sit, not a wall-contour product. Modes available on the free map include trolling, anchor and longline.

Application: read the edge in the map, anchor or cast at dawn. Drop-off trolling belongs to the east wall.

The steep side east of that drop is Kvarner fishing.

Where can't you fish in Istria, and which licence do you need?

Brijuni National Park is closed to fishing; Lim Bay is a shellfish-farming zone with restrictions; harbour and marina limits apply. Every cast on this shore needs the Croatian recreational sea licence, shore or boat. AlgoCatch does not sell it.

Nearby hops into Slovenia are a different jurisdiction; Slovenian water and rules start north of the northern tip. Cross that line and the Croatian ticket does not apply.
