Seabream and pandora on Hvar hold structured edges and lee mixed ground, especially in spring and autumn. Mackerel and bonito make sense in the warmer season on more current lines, very early. Local mistake: fishing structure mid the busiest anchorage at midday or forcing pelagic work on the wrong rough side. Tie species to side, hour and quiet. Hvar offers both - on different belts.

Access and trip shape

You reach Hvar by ferry or a longer run from the mainland; then choose a base (Hvar, Stari Grad, Jelsa, Sućuraj) by wind and radius. A typical serious day is 4-7 hours with a limited radius - not “around the island”. A boat is almost mandatory for quality results; shore is local and selective. In season the Pakleni and town surroundings are busy - early start or a move away from peaks. Fuel, water and a return plan are part of the kit. If weather is marginal, stay in lee near base instead of forcing the opposite island side.

Recreational sea fishing here needs a Croatian permit. Shore and boat are different documents. Check current 2026 prices and where to buy before you wet a line. AlgoCatch does not sell the licence.

Water character

Hvar water carries an island, more open character with a strong side contrast. Lee bays and the Pakleni give a maze of shallower structured belts; the exposed side brings more swell and a different rhythm. The Hvar Channel toward the mainland adds a current context for those coming from the Split direction. Summer traffic changes quiet around popular anchorages. After a jugo flats can be murky; after a bora look for true lee - on a long island that is not always the “nearest bay”. Here water punishes the wrong side more than a lack of a “secret” mark.

Season

May-June: an excellent compromise of temperature and still-manageable traffic. July-August: dawn or nothing for a serious rhythm; midday the island becomes more tourist. September is often a gold window - still-warm water, fewer crowds. October holds anchored work; November already cuts by links and weather. Winter is rare and needs flexibility. On Hvar also read season through Pakleni and town anchorage occupancy - the same geographic belt at midday in July is not the same belt at dawn in September.

Techniques

Island side first, then trolling along relief to search, then anchor. In lee mazes (e.g. around the Pakleni off peaks) anchoring has priority over long trolling. Do not burn fuel on a “circuit” - choose 1-2 belts. Shore is an add-on, not the main plan. For pelagics stay in an early window on more current lines. If wind swings, move side or shorten the day. Hvar rewards those prepared with plan B, not those with the longest morning steam.

Depths and bottom

Working depths in the coastal band: about 27.4-80 m (median 78.3 m, 33437 samples). From shallow bays and the Pakleni to a working belt around 10-45 m on exposed sides. For seabream and pandora often the mid structured belt. Do not measure success by the biggest depth on the plotter.

Under a working pin the chart reads Folk-5 mixed, rock. That class - not the town name - is what the habitat score is matching.

Conditions and when to stay ashore

A bora and a jugo on a long island mean the “other side” can be an hour or more away - do not improvise late. In season avoid afternoon Pakleni if you want quiet for anchoring. Do not underestimate a return into wind. If the forecast breaks, stay near base. Hvar is not a place to insist on the view when swell builds.
